What do you think of when you think of the term “SEO“? What should you be doing if you are trying to improve your websites positions?

local SEO reportWhen most people think about SEO they think about their “keywords” and not much else at all.

If this is what you have been doing and not see results then maybe you should be looking elsewhere.

Google’s search engine algorithms not only look at the relevance of your keywords on your web pages but they also look at information such as the length of time visitors stay on your site, bounce rates, errors, broken links, number of pages viewed, inbound and outbound links etc…

Giving users content and an experience so that they stay on your website and interact with your businesses content can boost your website’s positions in Google. Looking at these factors can also improve your visitors user experience and increase conversion rates for the visitors that come to your website already.

These 13 steps will help you improve your website and your websites SEO rankings.

1. Useful – high quality – relevant content

The amount of time visitors spend on your website and reading your content can affect your websites SEO ranking.

When you provide useful content that visitors want to read they will stay on your website longer, become more invested in what you have to say and be more likely to purchase your products or services.

How much content you should have on your website depends on what products or services you have to offer. You could start by looking on page 1 of Google to see how much content your competitors have on their sites to get their rankings so high. The amount of content will depend on what you are trying to be found for.

2. Page load times

Both Google and Bing take page load speeds into account when positioning a website in their search results.

Google know that people want information and they want information fast, so if it takes ages for your website to load then they will go elsewhere. Slow page times can be an easy thing to improve there are so many things that can cause a page to load slowly.  These include using caching plug-ins, making your website code clean and streamlined, optimizing image sizes and removing unwanted plugins.

3. Image optimisation

There are many ways to improve image sizes and it’s not just about choosing the correct image file format and image sizing. There are other ways to make sure your images aren’t holding your SEO efforts back. You can look into optimising your images to decrease file size, you also need to think about what your files are called and making sure you have appropriate alt and description tags. Getting everything right with your images can improve page load times and also improve rankings.

4. Header tags

We come across many websites that don’t have correct headings, it’s more about increase font size and making it BOLD. You need to use correct HTML heading tags. Each page as a minimum should have a H1 tag and it should also only have only one! We often find CMS websites such as WordPress have the website name coded in as the H1 tag, if this is the case on your website I would recommed updating your websites template.

Proper use of header tags within your website can also help break up your content making your website easier to read and for the visitors to get the information they require.

5. Broken links

No one wants to click a link and end up no where or a 404 page. Broken website links make for bad usability and unhappy website visitors.

Google also consider a large number of broken links as a signal of an old, neglected and outdated website which they obviously won’t rank as high.

Thankfully, there are tools you can use to check your website so you don’t need to do it manually. You can use tools such as:

6. Readability

Make you content easy to read. Read you content again, think to yourself “what does that mean?” if you have to explain it then your visitors may not understand what you are saying.

7. Layout and formatting

Correct formatting can help improve user experience and make your content easier to read, so your visitors will stay on your website longer and be more likely to buy your products or services.

Formatting can have a huge impact on a websites usability:

  • Use a font size that is easy to read.
  • Use bold and different colors – sparingly and strategically – you should use these effects to highlight important information
  • Use short paragraphs that are easy to read
  • Make use bullets and numbered lists
  • Break up your content into sections with sub headings.

8. Contact us page

This should go without saying but it is something we see regularly. Make sure you have a contact page on your website, this is something Google look for, you should include all your contact information and this should match the details you have used in “Google My Business”.

9. More than 1 page

A new “trend” is to have a one page website, a site where the menu just takes you to a different place on the home page. This is a big NO in SEO, think about it from Googles point of view, if you only have one page on your website and your competitors have multiple pages, who is more likely to give visitors all the information they require.

If you have a 1 page website and want to be found on Google, then I would suggest a redesign to a multi page site.

11. Site layout and navigation

If  visitors can’t find the information they are looking for fast then they will go to another website that does, which will contribute to a higher bounce rate, low dwell time and a low number of visited pages. Make sure your website has a good layout, people can navigate your site easily. Also think about how your site map looks, make use of good structure and hierarchy.

12. Mobile optimization

Is your website mobile friendly? From April 2015, Google started to give preference to websites that are Google friendly so if your site isn’t then you could have been pushed down several places. It’s not just about being found on Google, with more and more people using their phones it’s important that your visitors can easily read your content.
